CULTVR Lab Residency Idea
‘This Place Is Yours’, is a looped animated video that cycles from day to night, beginning by exiting a home scene through the window, and then returning to the same scene by nightfall after journeying through spring foliage, over water and through a cityscape while the lighting changes to illustrate the passage of time. The momentum of the video comes from the camera constantly pushing forward and zooming in through the different locations throughout the piece. The project will be brought to life using 3D computer animation, 2D motion graphics and other digital means. The project is an extension of the digital dream theme that all of my work as an artist exists to explore. In this piece I will immerse the audience in a world where human invention and nature coalesce to create moments of great sublime beauty, and highlight beauty in the mundane, inspiring audiences to indulge in a dream, if only for a moment. The piece highlights the differences between the dreamworld I create versus the real world I think my work needs to serve as a respite from. I want the audience to feel excited, calmed and inspired all at once when looking upon the piece. I believe that as they stare up at the video on the dome above them they will be able to escape into this fantasy city and transcend above the reality of their own lives if for only a few minutes. Comments I get frequently from my audience about my art are often, ‘this feels like a memory I never had’, or ‘this gives me a mix of nostalgia and euphoria’, and ‘this is what my imagination used to look like’. I seek to inspire similar responses with this project for this residency opportunity.

* The following is a draft storyboard created by stitching together images I already had created for other projects. New visuals will be created for the project. The images here serve to demonstrate the broad strokes of what happens in the video, not the exact aesthetic.

The video loop begins in a home interior scene with the camera moving towards and then through the window.

Example of zooming through window
Once we exit the room, the camera moves quickly through spring foliage, over water, and towards a cityscape and bridge where a train is crossing.

Once the camera is situated inside the train carriage, we take a moment to hold on the train as it itself moves through different environments.

The train enters a tunnel scene and the camera once again begins movement. We zoom through the train window into darkness.
Once in the dark, stars and colours begin to twinkle in and out of the shadows, before building up so as to create the silhouettes of plant life.

In between the trees and the darkness, a light emerges. This is revealed to be a window, and we zoom through it to return to the same interior scene as the beginning. The sun rises and the loop starts over.
